2012-2016 Teaching Visual Arts at The Josiah Quincy Elementary School in Boston

In 2012 Christos received a public art commission from the Josiah Quincy Elementary School in Boston, to create a permanent outdoor mosaic mural for a small park area along Oak Street in Downtown Boston.

In conjunction with this commission, he offered to lead several art classes to educate the students on the art of mosaics. He created the mosaic panels on site at the school, hand cutting and cementing one piece of porcelain tile at a time, and sharing the process with students (from all grade levels).

Following the completion of this project, he was awarded a teaching grant through the Boston Public Schools Arts Expansion Initiative and Edvestors for 2013, 2014, 2015, & 2016.

He provided regular instruction in Art and Art History to the 4th & 5th grade students at The Josiah Quincy School as an artist in residence while also creating permanent public art projects for the school, involving the students.

2013 Teaching a mosaic class at The Gardner Pilot Academy in Boston

Working with ARCK Boston (Art Resource Collaborative for Kids) Christos volunteered to lead a mosaic class for the Gardner Pilot Academy in the Allston neighborhood of Boston.

He gave the students a brief overview of the history of mosaics, highlighting key examples from some of the best known mosaics from the past, and taught them how to construct a simple mosaic of their own.

The final artwork created by the students was put on public exhibit at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (SMFA) from June 20th to July 8th 2013.

You can read more about this project by clicking here as well as another summary on the ARCK Boston site.

Christos was invited to Mountview Middle School in Holden, MA to speak to art students about his art. He gave them a slide presentation and showed them video footage of his public art projects.

This was a very rewarding experience for him and reminded him of how important it is to bring real world experiences into the classroom.
